Do you really know what’s in your shampoo?

What is SLS and paraben-free shampoo?

SLS is short for sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate. This is a foaming agent normally added to shampoos so they lather up for an easier wash. However, SLS tends to be drying for most scalps and can potentially irritate others. An SLS-free shampoo does not contain sodium lauryl or sodium laureth sulphate. For those who struggle with flaky or itchy scalps, one of the easiest ways to solve this problem could be to eliminate SLS from one’s haircare products by choosing an SLS-free shampoo.

Parabens are a commonly used preservative to keep the formula of skincare or haircare products intact. There is some data that suggests that parabens can be harmful to the skin but dermatologists and trichologists seem divided on the issue. Either way, you can find shampoos and conditioners without parabens if you are looking to avoid them.

Why sulfate and paraben-free shampoos are popular

Both SLS and paraben-free shampoos are popular for many reasons. For one, SLS free shampoos can keep your scalp hydrated. Similar to how sulphates in cleansers can dry your face out, sulphates in shampoos dry your scalp out over time. To prevent your scalp from becoming too dry, developing flakiness, and in some cases, dandruff, an SLS free shampoo works wonders. In such shampoos, instead of SLS, gentler foaming agents are used that lather the shampoo lightly but give you an effective hair wash.

Similarly, for anybody looking to avoid artificial preservatives, paraben-free shampoos tend to be the go-to. These shampoos use safe artificial preservatives instead of parabens. However, you can also find natural preservatives in shampoos if you plan on avoiding parabens. Preservatives are essential in a cosmetic product for it to remain intact over time.

Why is paraben-free shampoo good?

Some experts claim that parabens in your shampoo can irritate your scalp, make your hair rough and dry, and create allergies such as itchiness and bumps. When you switch to a natural hair care product, you avoid these potential haircare concerns and keep your scalp healthy. Note that parabens are under contention so we cannot say for sure whether they irritate the scalp or not. But if you plan on taking the natural route, paraben-free shampoos can benefit you a lot.

Like your hair and skin, your scalp can be sensitive to external irritants in products. Some people prefer artificial preservatives while others might find them drying. If you struggle with a sensitive scalp, opting for an SLS and paraben-free shampoo can maintain the pH of your scalp at a healthy level. An all-natural shampoo will be packed with nourishing ingredients that can cleanse, moisturise, and nourish your scalp without irritating or drying it out.
