Layering your skincare – How to layer products in your skincare routine

For most, a skincare routine has more than a single step. With multiple products to apply, how do you know which to apply first?

This is where the art of layering your skincare comes in.

Layering skincare is simple.

Using a simple rule as your guide, you will never have to wonder how to layer products in your skincare routine again.

So what is this rule?

Apply Thinnest to Thickest

After cleansing, you want to start by applying the most lightweight and ‘thin’ products first. These include toners, serums, face gels, and other water-based products. If you are not using a toner or a serum you can simply move on to the thinnest product in your routine, including your moisturizers. On top of this, you want to slowly add thicker products like a cream.

Finally, you can finish off with oils that tend to be the thickest.

The logic behind this is that the lightweight products absorb faster and create a good base for the thicker products to sit on. Note that this rule has some exceptions. Some people find their skin is better moisturized when they apply their face oil under their cream. Others might be using a strong treatment and may want to add it at the end of their routine to prevent a harsh reaction on their skin.

To sum up, the key is to follow the thinnest to thickest rule as a basis for layering skincare and make tweaks based on your skin.
