The Complete Guide to Skin-Care Layering

How to layer

Layering skincare works through a simple rule of thumb: apply the thinnest product and proceed toward the thickest. So, if your skincare routine consists of a serum, moisturiser, and face oils, this will also be the order in which you use these products. Layering works best when you keep your routine consistent and follow this basic rule. Most people find it tempting to start off with multiple products at once, about 5-6 in just one skincare routine. While this might work for some people, it might be hard to stick to a long skincare routine when you are just starting. Try to keep a basic skincare routine and layer as follows: toner,  serum, moisturiser, oil.

Why layering is important

Layering is crucial to getting the most out of your skincare routine. This is because when you layer your skincare improperly your skin does not absorb all of the ingredients you are applying to it. Hence, thinner products that can be absorbed quickly are applied first. Following this, thicker products that need to be left on the skin for quite some time to be absorbed fully can be applied.

Layering and skin types

Different skin types might want to incorporate varying degrees of layering into their skincare routine. An oily skin type might find layering more hydrating products to be more fruitful than a dry skin type who can opt for thicker products. On the other hand, someone with combination skin that requires both hydration and deep moisturization will benefit most from a mix of products layered thinnest to thickest.
